WDC History
The WDC started in 1985 in conjunction with the Epiphany celebration in Tarpon Springs, FL. The conference was established to bring together Greek folk dancers here in the United States with their counterparts in Greece. The first group of instructors came from the famous Dora Stratou Dance Troupe in Athens. Since 1985 hundreds of individuals and groups have attended this annual event in order to learn more about the Greek folk culture. Seminars in dance, music, and Greek folk customs are included in the 3 day weekend. Dancers come from throughout the United States and Canada and share information and materials with the instructors from Greece. The WDC was the first conference to unite Greece with the United States for the purpose of perpetuating the Greek folk culture in North America. Originally the event was always held in Tarpon Springs but now travels to other cities like Atlanta, New York, and Boca Raton.
